Monument Valley

Thursday, May 24: Left the lodgings at the Grand Canyon and went to Yavapoi Point to view the canyon and walk through the Geology Museum.  Both were worth the trip.  The museum location was chosen for the best view of the canyon, and it really is.  We then drove towards Cortez, stopping first at a Indian Trading Post for gifts and other items.

Then to Monument Valley, which is in the Navaho Nation and run by them.  We checked out the visitor center and drove part of the way in on a dirt road that winds around the monuments.  They are high rock “spires” and other shapes rising out of the desert.  Apparently many western movies were shot here.  Very impressive sights.

We then went to Goose Neck State Park to see the San Juan river going around long, narrow bows.  This very small park has very impressive scenery.  This area seemed really arid – and we have been in arid country most of our trip.

Fortunately Gayle was driving as Pete had a pretty sudden and severe attack of vertigo.  Gayle stopped at several locations to help Pete out and did all the work in setting up the motel room.  Pete finally was good enough to get to the room and napped long enough to feel better.
